But then, there’s the second kind, the second kind of a beautiful place. The hidden, the small, the subtle, but beautiful nonetheless. They’re sort of even more special, being as they are. Ovciji Brod is a perfect example of such a place. This small Ottoman stone bridge has been surviving the winds and rivers of time for centuries, tucked away in the barren landscape around Nevesinje. In a way, it has been patiently waiting for you and everything you want to capture.

Tvrdoš monastery

Serene, ancient beauty. That’s Tvrdoš monastery in a nutshell. It’s been the holiest of holy places in the Republic of Srpska for more than half a millennium. It radiates a special energy. You can see it, you can feel it, you can film it. Monks strolling through the yard, incense smoke flowing across the frescoes, the view of endless fields from the monastery walls, and the dark, cool wine cellars with rows of wooden barrels – it’s a perfect scene, centuries in the making.

The Bileća Lake

The Bileća Lake holds a lot. Covering a surface of more than 30 square kilometers, it holds a lot of water. It holds a lot of secrets too. There are a few villages hidden under the surface of the lake, left there in the 1970s when the whole area was flooded for dam construction. The lake holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, being a favorite seaside substitute for the landlocked Republic of Srpska. But more than any other thing, Bileća lake holds a lot of possibilities. A lot of views, a lot of scenes, and compositions for the movie screen. Be it the beaches, the island, the landscape, the clear blue water, or the hidden villages underneath… this location is a beauty.

Strač Fortress

Not many things grow in the barren, rocky landscape of Hercegovina, but century-old fortresses seem to do well. Fortress Strac near the city of Trebinje is one of them. Semi-decayed, semi-buried in the earth, this Austro-Hungarian fortress is the defining feature of the landscape. The rocks, the hills, and the levels of stone walls rising out of hilly rocks – the view manages to resemble a scene deep out of the Middle East or Northern Africa… all without leaving Europe.

Krupa na Vrbasu monastery

The monastery in the photo looks like it grew and bloomed together with the trees. That’s fitting. It’s old enough to be considered a rightful part of the landscape. It carries with it the same peace that nature does. And just like nature, it has its seasons, the cycle of being torn down and rebuilt. Today, the monastery in Krupa na Vrbasu, is in pristine condition. In all 900 years of being a sanctuary in this deep nature, it has never looked better. It’s never been more ready to be captured. And if you need a bit more for your B-Roll, just have a short stroll. Five hundred meters uphill – a medieval fortress. Five hundred meters downhill – beautiful cascading waterfalls. What more do you need?

Village of Bjelosavljevici

A brand new Orthodox church, in a village, on a mountain. Scattered houses, scattered rocks, just a handful of residents. That’s it. That is all that the village of Bjelosavljevici is on paper. It really shouldn’t be and shouldn’t feel as special as it does. Maybe it’s the remoteness and the stillness that makes it so. Maybe it’s those mountain views. Or the 360 medieval tombstones just laying around. Or the sunsets! Maybe it’s that lone tree next to the church, a tree with a shade where your main character can rest and look at that Windows XP wallpaper in front of them. Maybe it’s all of those. Whatever this thing may be, this x factor, we’re thankful for it, and you’ll be thankful too once you capture it in your film.

Ravna Planina

Ravna Planina, near Pale, is a winter haven. I mean, the Winter Olympics happened in this area, a few kilometers away. But here’s the thing about this winter haven – we can leave out the winter part. This place is a haven all year round. It’s a summer resort, a great hiking spot, and a natural lookout of sorts, overlooking the city of Pale under it and the mountain peaks surrounding it. There are no Olympic rings here, but there are these two ring-like features – two lakes, on a cliff, with a breathtaking view in front of them. Getting here is easy. Filming here is easy. Staying here, in a beautiful hotel, surrounded by nature, is pretty easy. So, snow or no snow, winter haven or just a haven – Ravna Planina is a prime filming location.

Žepa Ottoman bridge

Our deep hills, covered in deep forests, can hide a lot of things. They can hide extraordinarily beautiful things. So get a bit closer to your screen, zoom in once or twice. Can you see it? We promise that there is a historic stone bridge in this picture. As you can (barely) see, a very small, but equally as beautiful, Ottoman bridge on the river Žepa, close to the city of Rogatica. It’s just twenty meters across, but there are centuries of history and stories within it. And once the sun hits the hills just right, cutting through the trees, and shining on the moss-covered stones, you’ll see the ancient beauty that these parts hide so well.

Hamam hot springs bathhouse

The Ottoman Empire had ruled over our land for centuries. Its traces can be traced, seen, and experienced all over the country – for example, in Višegrad, in the Hamam hot springs bathhouse. This hammam, which means bathhouse in Turkish, is a beautiful and unique reminder that these remnants of the Orient are truly ancient. Its waters had been running hot, in this historic place, in this well-preserved building, for five hundred years. It’s a place that deserves to be seen, that deserves scenes. Exotic, private, historic, romantic, or any other scene you can envision.

Ethno Village Stanisici

Our history, the centuries of our way of life, is something we’re very proud of. That’s why we keep it alive. Places like the Ethno Village Stanisici, near the city of Bijeljina, encapsulate that perfectly. The village is a living exhibition of the Balkan past. Within its walls are stone houses, castles, taverns, and churches. The complex is connected by boats, trains, and carriages, riding down the cobbled streets and bridges that cross the big lake in the center. Simply put, this place is a period piece, with all the exteriors and the interiors playing their part perfectly.
